PE K-3: Students in grades K-3 focus the most on Locomotor skills, Manipulative skills, moving safely in space, balancing, and cooperation type games. The Locomotor skills (walk, run, hop, skip, jump, shuffle, gallop, leap) are introduced in kindergarten and are reinforced throughout their entire time at MES. Manipulative skills (overhand throw, underhand throw, one hand roll, toss, catch, dribble, dribble with foot, kick) are introduced at the end of 1st grade and are carried with them through 6th grade. K-3 movers are still developing their bodies at a very fast rate. Keeping their bodies safe is without a doubt the number one goal. Respecting the equipment and respecting each other also come into play every time there is a PE class.
PE 4-6: Students in grades 4-6 will focus on team sports, but also have added in more advanced sports/activities such as Kan-Jam, Floor Hockey, Nitro Ball (inversed volleyball) and more! Students also take part in a cooperation unit that involves them using teamwork, strategy and communication to achieve a common goal. Another unit added is the “Game Creation” unit. In this unit students worked together with a partner to create a new game that is both fun and enjoyable but also contributes to at least 2 of the 5 components of Health Related Fitness. 6th graders have the luxury of participating in Middleton’s own Fitnessgram. A number of tests are put together by the Fitnessgram company that allow the entire United States to be assessed in the same physical activities. Through this test, we can track our students fitness levels and see how they grow throughout the year! Tests include the 20m pacer test (cardio), Push up test (muscular endurance/strength), Sit up test (muscular endurance/strength), Sit and reach (flexibility) and shoulder test (flexibility).
Health 4-6: In health class, students learn about mental health, in depth looks on the human body, the human brain, respiratory system, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, nutrition, calorie intake, healthy snacks, puberty, hygiene. Students go through a number of interactive videos, interactive quizzes, lecture, projects and more to ensure all types of learners are accounted for.
